Heart of Worship

🎶 Miriam – The Worshipper and Prophet

Scripture:

“Then Miriam the prophet, Aaron’s sister, took a timbrel in her hand, and all the women followed her, with timbrels and dancing. Miriam sang to them: ‘Sing to the Lord, for he is highly exalted.’”

— Exodus 15:20–21

When the Red Sea parted, Miriam did not quietly move on. She picked up a tambourine, led the women in dance, and proclaimed: “Sing to the Lord, for he is highly exalted.”

Miriam is the first woman in Scripture called a prophet. She helped watch over Moses as a baby, spoke alongside her brothers in leading Israel, and lifted her voice in worship at a decisive moment of deliverance.

Her song teaches us:

Worship is testimony. Her singing declared what God had done. Worship is leadership. She invited others to join in praise. Worship is resistance. Singing after slavery proclaimed that Pharaoh’s power was broken.

👉 Miriam’s “superpower” was prophetic worship.

Too often we think of worship as filler between the “real” parts of faith. But Miriam shows us that worship is warfare. It shapes us. It frees us. It announces God’s victory.

Reflection Question:

What is your “song of victory”? How might your worship encourage someone else to trust in God’s deliverance?
