I must admit that, although I have heard of Howard Thurman from other classes, I have not extensively studied this great man of the faith. At the same time as I am taking this course with Dr. Tim Van Meter (PT610: Spiritual Formation and Social Change), I am also taking Community Organizing and Preaching: Power, Action, and Justice with Dr. Kyle Brooks. I am learning about the power of prophetic preaching, and how we can interject social change or social justice into our messages that help spur people to action.
Howard Thurman is teaching me several things, but one prominent item comes from the book Howard Thurman Essential Writings when he first questions spirituality: “social questions” are integral to the spiritual life. This conviction not only guided his personal spiritual quest; it also led Thurman to pioneer spiritual insights that would have a profound influence on individuals, the church, and society.”
Social Questions | Spiritual Life
I wonder where the balance is between preaching politics, preaching justice, and remaining silent. Is there a duty as preachers that we proclaim all of the good news which also calls us to preach on social questions? I am navigating these questions, and I hope to glean more from Howard Thurman on this topic.
